Freezing Rain Warning

Issued at 21:12 Monday 22 January 2018

Significant freezing rain is expected tonight into Tuesday.

Snow and ice pellets are falling across Eastern Ontario, with 5 cm of the white stuff already reported at Ottawa Airport. The precipitation will change over to freezing rain near midnight.

An extended period of freezing rain is likely tonight through Tuesday morning with several millimetres of ice accumulation.

Roads will likely become slippery, initially due to snow followed by a layer of freezing rain. The commute this evening as well as the Tuesday morning commute will likely be impacted by icy roads.

Precipitation will slowly change over to rain on Tuesday as a warm front gets close.

However, latest indications show that the freezing rain may last into Tuesday afternoon right in the Ottawa Valley including the National Capital Region. Warm fronts approaching from the south often have a lot of difficulty moving through in this type of situation, as the cold air and below zero temperatures stubbornly stay put in the Ottawa Valley.

This weather system may cause power outages and road closures.

###

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Utility outages may occur.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when rain falling in sub-zero temperatures creates ice build-up and icy surfaces.
