Snow Squall Watch

Issued at 15:52 Thursday 08 December 2016
Summary

Snow squalls are expected to develop. Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.

###

Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Snow squall watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ec.weathernlwo.ec@canada.ca or tweet reports to #NLwx.

Special Weather Statement

Issued at 15:51 Thursday 08 December 2016
Summary

A low pressure system south of Nova Scotia is expected to rapidly intensify as it crosses the Avalon Peninsula Friday morning. Although the system will be crossing the island quickly, heavy snowfall accumulation is possible during a short period of time. Snow is expected to begin overnight tonight and will come to an end by Friday afternoon. Snowfall warnings have been issued for much of northeastern Newfoundland. Total snowfall accumulation may also possibly reach 15 cm over parts of central Newfoundland, the Bay d'Espoir Highway and northern sections of the Burin Peninsula.

Environment Canada meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation and will expand snowfall warnings if required.
