Special Weather Statement

Issued at 22:38 Saturday 25 February 2017
Summary

Early season snowmelt expected on Sunday.

A low pressure system is forecast to track out of the Great Lakes region and into northern Quebec tonight. Snow ahead of this system has begun over western and southern Labrador and will spread to north later this evening. Precipitation will then change to a period of ice pellets and freezing rain for most areas overnight.

On Sunday, precipitation is forecast to change to rain for most areas, with daytime highs reaching a few degrees above zero. The rainfall and unseasonably warm temperatures will cause significant snowmelt throughout the day on Sunday and could lead to pooling of water. Temperatures will then plunge well below freezing Sunday night as a cold front sweeps across the region, causing slippery conditions due to freezing of pooled water, as well as bringing flurries and brisk northwesterly winds.
