Your Weather: Video Shooting Tips

Video Shooting Tips

Listed below are some tips from our Weather Network videographers, producers and editors.

» IF AVAILABLE, USE A TRIPOD

•  This will make your shot steady and look more professional.

» FOCUS

•  Set your camera on auto-focus. This will allow your shot compositions to always be in-focus. If you are using manual focus, zoom in and focus on the object and then zoom out. This will make sure your shot is sharp.

» KEEP IT STEADY

•  If you don’t have a tripod, do not use your zoom lens or pan the camera quickly. Shoot wide, steady shots to allow for easier editing. Hold a shot for at least 10 seconds. If you are comfortable panning the camera, pan the shot slow and steady.

•  If your cameras have the Steady shot option, put it on.

» LIGHTING

• Since most of your shooting will be outdoors, lighting should be fine. Have your camera setting on auto-iris or full automatic mode so the camera adjusts to different lighting conditions. Avoid shooting in the sun’s direction.

» WHITE BALANCE

•  Make sure your camera is set to auto white balance.

» AUDIO

•  Make sure your audio settings are turned on. Natural sound will make your video more effective and engaging. Also set your audio controls to automatic.

» CHARGE YOUR BATTERY

•  If you are planning to shoot, be sure you always have your battery fully charged. If you can, bring an extra battery just in case.

» RULE OF THIRDS

•  This is a way to frame a subject breaking the frame into 9 equal boxes for a more compelling shot. Try not to center your subject, but keep it a little to the left or right of the frame to allow for movement within the frame.

» FILE SIZE OR TYPE ACCEPTED

•  Any standard video format

Maximum file size for video: 512 MB
