A giant amongst constellations, Cetus, the whale, spans a large part of the sky below Pegasus and to the right of Taurus. The aquatic giant appears to wade near the southern horizon and just like its earthly counterpart; this celestial whale can be a challenge to spot. While its stars are relatively faint compared to nearby constellations, Cetus does have one magical sight in store for skywatchers.
Known as the ‘Wonderful Star’ Mira is celebrated as the earliest variable ever discovered in 1638. Amazingly, its light fades from naked-eye brightness to becoming visible only in binoculars. The average period is 331 days and the star only maintains its maximum for a few weeks, before rapidly losing its brilliance. Located 420 light years away, Mira is a titanic Red Giant that is 7000 times brighter than our Sun. If we could replace our Sun with Mira, the outer edge of this monster would reach beyond the orbit of Mars.
