Some Goldeneyes overwinter in Ottawa, where there's open water at rapids year-round. I can watch them from my office window on the Rideau River - but this one was on the Ottawa River, where the Deschenes Rapids keep the water from freezing even in a cold winter like this one. There were dozens of mallards, one American Black Duck, and six Goldeneyes when I was there. This is a male.
