During our weekly nature walk, my students and I observed a spiny soft shell turtle (often referred to as the pancake turtle because of its flat, round leathery upper shell) is Ontario’s only turtle with a flexible, leathery carapace (upper shell) and the only species in the province. It is on the endangered list and we were pleasantly surprised to have the opportunity to observe it, first in and then out of the water. It certainly was our 'catch of the day!'
