In the Gregorian calendar, the first day of the year is January 1. For a long time, this was not standardized – Britain adopted January 1 as New Year's Day in 1752.
In ancient Babylon, New Year's was the first new moon after the first day of spring – the season of re-birth and planting new crops. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical or agricultural significance.
In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the civil New Year falls on January 14. Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, occurs every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, about four to eight weeks before spring.
