July 10, 2010 — Everything from flooding to power outages and flight delays were reported after severe thunderstorms rumbled across Quebec on Friday. Check out the aftermath of the heavy rain on the streets in downtown Montreal.
Montrealers were expecting relief from the heat and humidity, instead severe thunderstorms rolled through the region resulting in major problems for the city instead.
The rain dumped nearly 58 mm over the city causing widespread flooding. Several areas of the city reported water pooling on highways as vehicles struggled to drive through. Lanes were closed because of severe flooding at L'Acadie Circle (an exit ramp off of Highway 40 in central Montreal).
At least three cars were caught in the heavy pools of water in the underpass. Cars were also stranded on the Laurentian Autoroute and on St-Laurent Boulevard.
Several flights arriving and departing from Trudeau airport were also delayed.
Hydro-Quebec reported that around 42,000 customers lost power Friday afternoon. The electricity was mainly out through Montreal, Monteregie and Lanaudiere regions. Officials said they couldn't confirm when the power would be restored to the region.
Two pillars that were supporting banners collapsed because of the strong winds and severe rain in the city's Plateau district. Police and emergency vehicles were rushed to Laurier Street after falling bricks from a wall struck a woman, leaving her with minor injuries.
Montreal's West Island was also inundated with water where approximately 66 mm of rain fell in less than an hour. Mayor Gerald Tremblay said, “It is as if the equivalent of two thirds of the rain that fell normally falls in the month of July.”
Thankfully, the rain has since tapered off for the region and Saturday was pretty much an ideal summer day. Additionally, much of the humidity passed with the heavy downpours. The fair and sunny conditions are expected to remain for the rest of the weekend.
