Newfoundland hit with another powerful storm

February 5, 2012 — After a wintery week across Newfoundland, blizzard conditions persisted through the weekend.

Poor road conditions across NL Thursday
Parts of the country have been questioning this winter so far, but there is still evidence of winter across Canada. Terrace, BC has seen a whopping 331.6 cm of snow since Dec.1, while Wawa, ON has seen 153.3 cm. And now, a wintery storm has brought totals in St.John's, NL up to 182.7 cm, proving that the season is far from over.
Earlier this week, parts of the Maritimes were walloped with over 30 cm of snow, and on Thursday, blizzard-like conditions closed schools across much of the Avalon Peninsula.
Around 20 cm of snow piled up in St. John's and that was enough to cause flight delays and dangerous driving conditions on the roads.
Then, on Friday, the Avalon Peninsula was blasted with yet another helping of snow.
"A low pressure system southeast of the Maritimes will rapidly intensified Friday as it tracks toward the Avalon," said Gina Ressler, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

Strong winds are also forecast overnight into Saturday.
"We're calling for gusts over 100 km/h along the eastern shores of Newfoundland," says Gerald Cheng, another meteorologist at The Weather Network. "That's sure to make for poor visibility on the roadways."
Commuters are advised to drive carefully because of high winds and blowing snow conditions.
The system will begin pushing out of the Avalon Peninsula during the day Saturday, but some onshore flow is still expected.
"Regardless of the exact snowfall accumulation, this will be a high-impact event due to the strong winds and blizzard conditions," notes Ressler.
