Winter blues getting to you? New skylight 'tricks' mind into seeing sunshine

Thursday, February 26, 2015, 2:14 PM - If any season leaves us longing for sunshine, it's winter. The invention of a new skylight that simulates the sun's rays could shed light on those impacted by seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and other forms of seasonal depression.
Developed by a company called CoeLux in Italy, the technology utilizes a material thinly coated with nano particles to simulate the way the suns' radiation is diffused through the Earth's atmosphere.
It may have the power to 'trick' the human mind into believing it is genuine sunshine, even on the dreariest winter day.

An LED projector illuminates the panel, emitting white light in a full spectrum that mimics sunlight -- and even the appearance of blue skies.
The lighting system is available in different geographical modes -- Mediterranean, Tropical and Nordic -- and has the potential to be efficient in a variety of applications.
Aside from the aesthetic appeal of the skylights in residential settings, the solar simulators also have the ability to be used in the healthcare sector, as a viable treatment for SAD or patients who are unable to venture outside.
However, if you're considering installing one in your home, be prepared to pay for it.
One unit costs £40,000 GBP plus the price of installation, which is equal to about $77,000 CAD.
