Fort McMurray is a reminder why fire bans are important

Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 2:27 PM - Why ban the use of fire?

Fire bans are issued to restrict or prohibit types of fire use because of potential high fire danger and poor air quality. During critical situations the Wildfire Management Branch can’t afford having human-caused fires divert resources from naturally caused ones.

For extreme situations a Restricted Fire Zone will come into effect. In Ontario, highly visible signs are placed along roadways and camping spots to indicate restricted areas and temporary fire rules. In Canada, outdoor fires are not permitted in a Restricted Fire Zone. Failure to comply can result in a fine or jail time.

The massive wildfire in Fort McMurray, Alberta is an example of why it is important to abide by fire advisories. In Alberta they are experiencing high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. More than 80 000 people occupy evacuations zones making this the largest fire evacuation in Alberta’s history.

A fire safety advisory is in full effect for Calgary. The advisory is a reminder to be cautious when using outdoor open flames-- including barbeques and backyard fire pits and with the disposal of smoking materials.

When camping and barbequing it is important to keep up to date on restricted ‘no fire’ areas. When you are camping it is a good idea to check the park website for their open fire restrictions. Remember that bans can come into effect at any time. Every provincial website has unique information on fire safety advisories.

Here are the some quick open fire rules you need to know:

  • Build your fire 15 metres away from buildings or tents and overhanging objects
  • Make sure you have extinguishing equipment to safely put out fires
  • Keep your fires small
  • Prevent burning toxic material such as treated lumber, plastics or drywall
  • Never leave your fire unattended

The Fort McMurray fire serves as a reminder to obey fire rules especially as the summer season approaches.
