Whiskey on the rocks in frozen style

Wednesday, April 1, 2015, 11:39 AM - We don't know what Japanese whiskey maker Suntory is paying its ad agencies, but they're getting their money's worth.

TBWA\Hakuhodo's now-award-winning ad campaign for the whiskey, featured in the video above, features unbelievably intricate 3D-printed ice cubes, for those of you who prefer your spirits on the rocks.

We've featured 3D-printing technology before, but the way the agency created those amazing ice sculptures is a little different. They used a CNC router, sometimes called 3D subtraction, not to make the figures from scratch, but to cut away the unnecessary bits, like a sculptor carving a statue from marble rather than moulding one from clay.

Fittingly for Japan, there's Godzilla in there, and a classic Japanese palace, but there's plenty of other designs, like the Statue of Liberty, sharks, guitars, rinks, even Nintendo's Mario.

There even seems to be an element of crowdsourcing. Suntory's website encourages people to take a photo of an item they want to convert to 3D using a free app, then send it in for a contest.

The figurines are unbelievably beautiful, and netted the agency some awards at Adfest 2015 last month. Check out our Storify of the best, below.
