Weather brief: Calm conditions ahead

Wednesday, May 20, 2015, 6:27 AM - Parts of Canada will see a break from active weather this week, with calm conditions in the forecast for several communities.

Here's your coast-to-coast roundup for May 20.

Atlantic Canada

  • Maritimes: Temperatures remain near seasonal on Wednesday, before a cool down and rain move in to the region towards the end of the week.
  • Newfoundland: It's a foggy start to the day for most of the province, with showers possible by the evening. Snowfall warnings are in place for parts of Labrador. "Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected in the west, while amounts up to 30 cm or expected in the north," according to a statement from Environment Canada.

Ontario & Quebec

  • Ontario: Fairly quiet conditions are expected in southern Ontario the next few days. High pressure will keep things dry and a few degrees below seasonal for many cities.
  • Quebec: After an active day Tuesday, including reports of a possible tornado, southern Quebec will be much quieter Wednesday, cloudy with a chance for showers. Temperatures will warm though the week, climbing to above-seasonal levels by the late weekend.

Western Canada

  • Prairies: The next few days are expected to be calm across the Prairies. The big story will be the temperatures. After a chilly start to the day for some on Wednesday, temperatures will gradually climb above seasonal levels with sunny skies by Thursday.
  • British Columbia: There's a risk for thunderstorms in the Whistler area Wednesday, but Vancouver should stay relatively dry with pleasant temperatures around 20C.
