WATCH LIVE: See thousands of walruses swarm this beach

Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 6:00 AM - If you time it right, the beach and cliffside in the webcam up above will be totally buried in a teeming throng of walruses.

How many exactly? Alaska's fish and game department says as many as 14,000 walruses at a time may congregate on the state's Round Island, where the webcam is located.

As for the webcam itself, it's back in action after ten years. It was previously broadcasting, funded by a private donor, but was shut down in 2005 for lack of funds.

The camera up above is now being hosted by Explore.org, whose donation to the Alaska government partly covers two staff to maintain the camera. They'll also welcome visitors to the island and try keep their boats away from the tusked horde.

That last part is important, as too much aircraft or boat activity can scare the walruses, triggering a stampede.

Round Island is one of four known places in Alaska where walruses are known to gather in large numbers, beginning in the spring. Mostly male walruses will "haul out" at these sites once the winter ice has moved out, and will spend days at a time there during the summer in large groups, in between fishing forays into nearby Bristol Bay.

And yes, you can, in fact, go to Round Island if you can afford it: The Alaska government issues permits to individuals or groups of up to eight, from May to August.

Not too many people seem to have availed themselves of the opportunity. CBC reports only 42 visitors braved the boat ride to the island, and only five camped out overnight.
