WATCH: Lightning bolt strikes in path of police cruiser

Saturday, May 30, 2015, 1:43 PM - An afternoon drive in stormy weather turned into the shock of a lifetime for one Mississippi police officer.

Sgt. Mark Rodriguez was travelling on a bridge over the Tchoutacabouffa River in the city of Gauthier when a bolt of lightning violently struck the bridge just ahead.

The strike was caught on video by the cruiser's dash cam.

Rodriguez said the intense close-up flash was nearly enough to blind him, and was accompanied by an earsplitting roar of thunder.

Thankfully, no one else was in the immediate area when the lightning struck.

When Rodriguez returned to the spot where the lightning hit the ground, he found a chunk of singed concrete.
