Vancouver dog isn't dead, it's sleeping

Cheryl Santa Maria

Tuesday, September 1, 2015, 4:36 PM - Comet the dog likes to take naps outside of his owner's shop, and he's been doing that almost daily for the past fourteen years.

There's nothing out of the ordinary about that.

But Comet has a strange way of sleeping. The 16-year-old dog likes to sleep on his back with his limbs sprawled out.

At first glace, he looks like he's dead.

The SPCA and the police have received numerous calls from concerned citizens. Local officials have visited the sidewalk near Quebec and Third in Vancouver several times and know Comet by name.

"It's constant. All day, every day," owner Lisa Dyer told the CBC.

"We always joke that he should have his own website, or a t-shirt on that says 'I'm okay!'"

Dyer describes Comet as "some kind of crazy wolf". She says he likes his sleep so much he won't move for anyone, or anything.

"People come by and ring the bells on their bicycles to get him to move. He refuses," Dyer says.

Comet was rescued by Dyer several years ago. She says she can't leave him at home because he gets anxious, so he has to come to work.

"He just feels like this is his corner and he's good," Dyer says. "This is just his spot, he's happy and comfortable here, he's been here all these years."
