Flight cancellations and school closures have begun as a powerful typhoon threatens parts of Taiwan.

More than 1,000 people have also been evacuated from a vulnerable coastal village.

China is also making preparations ahead of Typhoon Soulik, the first to hit the region this year.

According to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau, light rain had started falling in Taipei on Friday morning, with heavier downpours expected later in the day.

Forecasters say fierce winds are also likely before the storm moves north of Taiwan early Saturday.

Crews have been readying water pumps and sandbags, while hundreds of soldiers assist with evacuations and rescues. The China Meteorological Administration said Soulik would make landfall in the eastern coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian on Saturday before moving inland.
