Thursday, May 28, 2015, 4:54 PM - Florida Police Officer Nelson Enriquez has been suspended with pay after two K-9 dogs were found dead inside his SUV amid hot temperatures, the Hialeah Police Department announced Thursday.

The dogs, a 7-year-old bloodhound named Jimmy and a 4-year-old Belgian malinois names Hector were assigned to Enriquez, who has worked for the police department for 13 years, seven of which have been spent as a K-9 officer.

After completing an overnight shift that ended at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Enriquez assisted in a missing persons case before returning home around 10 a.m. and neglected to remove the dogs from the cargo compartment of his police SUV.

Police were called to the Enriquez home around 6:50 p.m. that day after the dogs were discovered inside the hot car.

"The entire Hialeah police department is in mourning," Sgt. Carl Zogby of the Hialeah Police Department said at a Thursday press conference.

"We have lost two beloved members of our Hialeah police family. So we are dealing with a very very serious situation, a very serious loss, and we are also in the grieving process.  We take this incident very very seriously."

The dogs lived with Enriquez, along with his wife and two children.

"The two dogs and the children were practically raised together," Sgt. Zogby said.

"The entire family is in mourning. It is something that has to be seen, the reaction, when something as terrible, as tragic, and as unfortunate as this happens. This officer is, by protocol, relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation as well."

The dogs were left in the car for approximately six hours in sweltering temperatures.
