Residents are picking up the pieces after severe weather struck Maryland and surrounding areas on Monday.

A tornado was reported west of Baltimore, where trees were snapped and flattened and debris scattered on yards and streets.

Mary Davison from Woodbine, Maryland says she was watching as the tornado passed right in front of her home. The twister tore down her garage and shed and sent pieces flying into nearby trees.

"I'm totally shocked it's gone and my stuff is everywhere," said Davison as she surveyed the damage.

Harsh weather was also reported in neighbouring New Jersey and Delaware, where thousands of residents in both states lost power Monday night.

Tornado warnings were dropped through the evening hours, but officials warned residents to be cautious of flash flooding.
