Sunday, June 9, 2013, 8:14 PM - Canadian winters can be long, painfully cold and leave you yearning for the hot summer heat while kicking back a few at the cottage. Well that time is finally upon us, so we thought we'd share our top five must-try cocktails that are sure to keep you cool this summer.
1. Mojito
Traditionally, a Mojito is a cocktail that consists of five ingredients: white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water and mint. The original Cuban recipe uses spearmint or yerba buena, a mint variety very popular on the island. The refreshing combination of sweetness, refreshing citrus and mint flavors are intended to complement the potent kick of the rum, and have made this clear highball a popular summer drink.
2. White Freezie Martini
Consider it a frozen treat with an adult twist. For this you'll need 1/2 oz Raspberry Sour Puss, 1/2 oz banana liqueur topped with Sprite or 7 Up soda. Shook or stirred, this will be sure to kick-up any Sunday
patio party.
3. White Wine Sangria
Hosting a backyard party or inviting the in-laws to the cottage? This is one sure way to bring the family together. The beauty of a White Wine Sangria is that it's equally delicious as it is easy to make. Just grab your favourite pitcher and a bottle of white wine (Riesling, Albarino, Chablis, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc), 2/3 cup white sugar, 3 oranges (sliced) or may substitute 1 cup of orange juice), 1 lemon (sliced), 1 lime (sliced), 2 oz.
brandy (optional), 1/2 liter of ginger ale or club soda. Stir and serve!
4. Lemon Drops on the Rocks
When life hands you lemons, make spiked lemonade! This certainly isn't your neigbourhood 10-cent a glass lemonade. To make this cooling refreshment all you'll need is a few ounces of your favourite vodka, about equal parts fresh lemon juice, and some sugar. Add ice and a thinly sliced lemon for a garnish and you'll be sure to impress even the toughest of cocktail critics!
5. Hurricane
You may think we are biased for adding this one in -- and you wouldn't be completely wrong -- however, it is our job to show you that summers can include more than just one type of a hurricane. This savory concoction is for those with a bit of a sweet-tooth. This Daiquiri relative is made up of 1 oz vodka, 1/4 oz grenadine syrup, 1 oz gin, 1 oz light rum, 1/2 oz Bacardi® 151 rum, 1 oz amaretto almond liqueur, 1 oz triple sec, grapefruit juice and pineapple juice. Pour all but the juices, in order listed, into a tall glass three-quarters filled with ice. Next, fill the cup with equal parts of grapefruit and pineapple juice, and serve.
