Strong storms with slight tornado risk heading to East Coast

Tuesday, August 4, 2015, 1:28 PM - Forecasters are warning people in the Maritime provinces to watch the skies Tuesday.

Potentially severe storms are on their way to the region in the afternoon and evening, and there's something rare coming with them: A slight chance of a tornado.

"There's a risk of clusters of storms to bring heavy rain, strong winds and moderate hail," Weather Network meteorologist Matt Grinter said Tuesday. "There is a two per cent risk of a tornado through New Brunswick, according to the U.S. Storm Prediction Centre. If winds back enough from whats forecast there could be a slight risk of a tornado."

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm watches for much of central and western New Brunswick, including Fredericton, and areas of Nova Scotia around the Bay of Fundy late afternoon.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain," the weather agency says. "Hail is also possible. Intense lightning is likely with any storm that develops."

In Quebec, which will experience part of this system, Environment Canada has severe thunderstorm watches in effect for the Eastern Townships.

As for Newfoundland, thunderstorm risk reaches the central and western parts of the island on Wednesday, with lingering showers afterward.

Although tornado risk is considered quite low, keep in mind any thunderstorm is capable of producing a tornado if the conditions are right. Keep an eye out for watches and warnings on your area, and tune in to The Weather Network on TV for ongoing coverage.
