Tuesday, November 25, 2014, 6:20 PM - On Tuesday afternoon Environment Canada issued special weather statements for a large swath of Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton, warning of heavy snow followed by cold weather. Meanwhile, winter storm watches are in place in the north.

While all three Prairie provinces are bracing for an extended period of cold and snow, Alberta was the only one with weather advisories in place on Tuesday afternoon.

"A major Pacific frontal system will bring heavy snowfall to parts of southern Alberta later this week, mainly over the mountain parks and the foothills," Environment Canada says in a statement.

"Upwards of 50 cm may fall in Grande Cache, with up to 20 cm likely in regions farther east."

The snow will be followed by a "deep freeze" this weekend, with temperatures dropping below -30C into the weekend.

HEAVY SNOW TO THE NORTH

Major snowfall accumulation over the mountain parks has prompted separate winter storm watches.

Grande Cache will be among the hardest hit. While Jasper and Banff is forecast to receive lesser amounts, both regions are should see "significant" accumulation.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations," EC warns.

"Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Spaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery."

Motorists are being advised to prepare for travel delays.

Environment Canada issues winter storm watches when at least 25 cm of snow is expected to fall in 24 hours or less.
