Snow and winds pick up across parts of the Prairies

Saturday, November 22, 2014, 6:19 PM - An Alberta clipper bringing snow and ice pellets to parts of the Prairies is making for some tricky driving conditions across the region.

Snowfall warnings are in effect for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for a system expected to bring 5 to 20 cm of snowfall by Monday morning. Freezing rain warnings also popped up in the central and northern parts of Prairies, but then dropped in the afternoon.

In Alberta, where the snow is starting to fall and the winds are beginning to pick up, the system should last until Sunday morning. Snowfall warnings are in effect in the province's far north and the northern slopes of the Cypress Hills, but although they do not include Edmonton, that city is still likely to get some notable amounts of snow.

In Saskatchewan, snowfall warnings were issued for the central areas. Freezing rain warnings also popped up in areas outside the band of snow in the Kindersley, Outlook and Moose Jaw areas.

As the system transits across the province, winds will pick up to 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h so there could be some visibility reductions.

The system moves into Manitoba later Sunday, lasting into Monday morning, with the central and inter-lake areas of the province in for the heaviest amounts.

Northern Ontario is next in the path, and the clipper will combine with a low coming in from the United States, potentially bringing snow to areas west and north of Nipigon by Sunday night, with winds gusting up to 70 km/h.
