Severe thunderstorms tear through Manitoba
Saturday, August 24, 2013, 11:01 -
Severe thunderstorms moving through southern and central Manitoba are bringing the risk of heavy rains, damaging winds and large hail into some areas.
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning across the region.
Thunderstorms began to intensify Saturday afternoon, as they moved into the hot and very humid airmass.
"One of the greatest concerns with these storms is the threat for flash flooding. The storms are slow moving and producing torrential downpours, so rainfall totals greater than 50 mm are expected in localized areas," said Doug Gillham, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. "However, as we often see with summer thunderstorms, not everyone in the region will see these significant rain amounts. As we head into the overnight, the storms will track into Western Ontario."
In addition to these thunderstorms, there are also some forming in the Hudson Bay Saskatchewan area and to the north of Swan River.
