Severe storm threat still on the table for Ontario Wednesday night

Wednesday, September 10, 2014, 12:05 PM - A severe thunderstorm threat looms for parts of Ontario, prompting Environment Canada to issue special weather statements in some areas.

"An early fall type of low pressure system over Iowa will track northeastward towards the Great Lakes today," says EC in the statement. "This moisture laden low is expected to drag a fairly sharp cold front across southern Ontario tonight."

"Rainfall warnings have also been issued and have expanded this morning to include Timmins and Kapuskasing and into parts of northern Quebec," adds Weather Network meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg. "Rainfall amounts could reach 50 mm or more in thunderstorms through central parts of Ontario. Southern Ontario should see a general 15-30 mm of rain, but locally higher amounts are possible."

Winds will also pick up with the incoming system and gusts could reach 70-80 km/h along the shorelines.

"Several places in southern Ontario will be feeling like the low to mid 30's with strong southwesterly flow today," Sonnenburg says. "Once the front passes this evening, temperatures will begin to cool and by the weekend our highs will be around the mid teens."

This system will bring the threat for thunderstorms through the afternoon hours with the greatest risks being strong winds and heavy rain.

"A squall line will push through this afternoon/evening with the cold front, so straight line damaging winds could be a threat," warns Sonnenburg. "Thursday we could see a couple lingering showers from the system with cooler temps."

"The wind will not be as strong on Thursday, but it will continue to be rather gusty throughout the day," adds Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham in his detailed storm analysis. "Rain will end early in the morning and then we should see some sun mixed in at times with temperatures falling from near-twenty early in the morning to the mid-teens for the afternoon."

Friday will bring a mixture of sun and clouds and temperatures more typical of mid-October with a high in the mid-teens.

Although the weekend will remain below seasonal, there are signs that we will return to a warmer than seasonal pattern as we head towards the first official day of autumn.

"While we will continue to see swings in temperatures at times it looks like the end of September and the beginning of October will include periods of late summer-like weather," Gillham says.
