Wednesday, August 26, 2015, 11:08 AM - Wicked thunderstorms that roared through the city of Calgary at the beginning of August caused around $100 million worth of damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Severe weather hammered the Greater Calgary Area with torrential rain, damaging winds and hail for two days in a row, on August 4th and 5th.

Emergency crews responded to more than 400 calls for help.

On Wednesday, August 4th, dark clouds rolled through the region ahead of heavy rain and hail. Reports of localized flooding were widespread, as floodwaters and hail overwhelmed underpasses, roads and basements.

Strong winds overturned manhole covers, and ripped the roof off at least one apartment complex.

Less than a day later, another round of powerful storms hit the same area on Thursday, August 5th. Calgary officials activated an emergency plan in anticipation of the slow-moving storms, ensuring that additional personnel were available to respond to weather-related emergencies.

Golf ball-sized hail quickly piled up in streets and backyards. Wind gusts reaching 105 kph wind gusts took down trees and power lines, leaving thousands of customers without electricity over both days.

There were no reports of injuries.

Across Canada, damages caused by extreme weather damage has totaled almost $10 billion since 1998.
