See Blosom, the world's tallest cow to ever live

Sunday, June 28, 2015, 3:28 PM - Blosom will be sadly missed but the beloved giant Holstein that stood over 6 feet tall was recently recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest cow to ever live.

The 13-year-old cow died on May 26 due to a leg injury that was beyond repair.

Blosom will be featured in the 2016 Guinness Book of World Records.

"The funny thing about Blosom was how unaffected she was by all the attention that seemed to surround her. As long as she had her oats, daily chin rubs and ear scratches, life was good," owner Patty Meads-Hanson said in a Guinness World Records news release.

The cow originally belonged to Meads-Hanson's father, who raised her on a family farm in Orangeville, Illinois. Blosom was measured at 190 cm shortly before she passed away. It was Meads-Hanson's father who suggested Blosom's height be checked out by Guinness World Record officials.

"I've finally got around to doing it, I'm just sorry he's not here to see it," Meads-Hanson said of her father in the Guinness World Record YouTube video.

The biggest challenge when it came to measuring Blosom was not having a large enough measuring stick, Meads-Hanson noted.

"Our veterinarian couldn't reach her so we had to find a step stool or stepladder for her to step on," the owner recalls in the video.

The cow was much taller at around 8-years-old, according to Meads-Hanson. Blosom was always treated like any other household pet.

"We hold our tallest animals at Guinness World Records in an extremely high regard due to their uniqueness and rarity in finding. We were devastated when we heard the news of Blosom’s death as she was such a friendly and gorgeous animal and her owner equally as wonderful and took such great care of her,"Guinness World Records Editor-in Chief, Craig Glenday said in the release. "She is definitely one of the standout highlights in our upcoming book and we hope the world enjoys seeing the pictures of her."

The previous record-holder for the tallest cow was Mount Katahdin, a Holstein-Durham cross that stood at 6-foot-2 in the early 1990s.

"I will cherish our memories forever," Meads-Hanson said. "I am excited for the world to meet Blosom soon in the 2016 edition, but I know it will be very bitter-sweet."
