A rapidly intensifying disturbance over the southern United States is setting its sights on Ontario.

The system will track towards Lake Michigan overnight and cross northeastern Ontario on Monday.

Rain, heavy at times, will arrive Sunday evening in southwestern Ontario and quickly spread eastward overnight.

Total rainfall amounts of 15 to 30 mm are expected by Monday night. Localized flooding is possible due to snow melt and additional showers.

"This may have an impact on the snow melt for parts of the snow belt regions around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay which received significant snowfall the past week," cautions Environment Canada (EC) in a special weather statement. "Some localized flooding is possible in these areas."

As the system crosses the province on Monday, strong southwesterly winds will strengthen to 50 gusting to 70 or 80 km/h.

"It'll be an extremely windy day for southern Ontario tomorrow and overnight as the Texas low and clipper merge together," says Weather Network meteorologist Erin Wenckstern. "Gusts will exceed 100 km/h, especially along the shores of the Great Lakes."

Winds of this magnitude may bring down some branches or the odd tree and cause sporadic power outages.

Meanwhile, freezing rain and winter storm warnings cover much of northern Ontario.

Snowfall warnings are in effect for parts of the north, including Geraldton, Kapuskasing, Moosonee and Lake Nipigon, with the snow beginning Sunday night, with the heaviest falling Monday.

"Expect freezing rain for today and mixed precipitation before transitioning over to snow," Wenckstern says.

But the upside will be above-seasonal temperatures for most of the province.

In southern Ontario, temperatures will be rising Sunday, and are already above zero. By Monday, it'll reach the mid-teens in some communities, with a high of 14°C forecast for the city of Toronto.
