Hurricane Rachel is swirling in the Pacific far off Mexico's Baja California peninsula and poses no threat to land amid forecasts it will weaken in coming hours.

Sunday, September 28, 2014, 7:24 PM - Tropical Storm Rachel strengthened into a hurricane Saturday and was forecast to begin meandering in the Pacific off Mexico's coast while posing no threat to land.

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds were around 140 km/h early Sunday. 

It was centred about 760 km/h west-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula and moving north-northwest at about 9 km/h.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm might strengthen some Sunday before slowing and weakening overnight.

Forecasters add that Rachel is expected to become nearly stationary and likely weaken to a tropical storm sometime Monday.
