Sunday, November 2, 2014, 4:07 PM - Canadians weren't the only ones getting an early taste of winter this weekend.

A powerful storm brought nearly 60 cm of snow in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina Saturday, a day after whipping high waves over Chicago's Lake Shore drive (see video below).

"The cold front that swept the Appalachian's brought some of the earliest snowfall on record to Georgia," said Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon.

And it's not over yet.

By Sunday, the system will bring heavy rain, snow and powerful gusts of up to 80 km/h from Long Island to Maine.

The National Weather Service in the U.S. has dubbed the storm a "Manitoba Mauler" due to its Canadian origin. The storm system dove southeastward on Halloween, ushering in a sudden blast of biting, winter cold from Illinois to Gerogia and northward to Maine.

The storm brought near-hurricane force wind gusts of 111 km/h to Gary Airport in Indiana on Friday, and caused hundreds of flights to be delayed or canceled at Chicago's O'Hare International, one of the world's busiest airports.

On Saturday, the storm brought record snowfall in Columbia, South Carolina. It was the first time the city had received snow before November 9. The previous record was set over 100 years ago.

Several areas were under winter weather advisories and the threat of freezing temperatures through Sunday night.

This system has since intensified and parked itself over the Maritimes.

"A low pressure system off the Bahamas and the low that brought cold, snowy conditions to the eastern U.S. combined to form the current Nor'easter in Atlantic Canada," Dillon explained.

The storm's effects will continue through Sunday night, but are expected to have mostly cleared out from the area by Monday.
