Power outages plunge Toronto into darkness
Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 11:46 PM -
Multiple power outages were reported across Toronto through to Mississauga Tuesday night.
According to the Toronto Star, officials are blaming the blackout on a "transmission issue" -- with some social media reports suggesting there was a bright flash in the sky prior to the 9 p.m. blackout.
By 11 p.m., power was slowly being restored to Toronto neighbourhoods.
Power coming back, along with sirens. Thank you hydro and emergency workers #darkto— Alejandra Bravo (@bravotoronto) April 16, 2014
Social media lit up with the hashtag #darkTO within minutes of the outage.
The city's transit committee used its social media accounts to inform people of delays due to the signal issues caused by a lack of power. By 10:30 p.m. ET, Toronto Hydro reported it was working with Hydro One on a transmission issue in the city's west end.
It is not clear how many Toronto Hydro customers were affected, but immediate reports suggest as many as 100,000 people may have been left in the dark.
No injuries have been reported but fire crews performed about a dozen elevator rescues, according to the CBC.
A Toronto hydro map shared during the height of the blackout shows how many residents were impacted.
Photos poured in from Torontonians, who were forced to use the glow of the moon and candles as a light source.
