Potent storm delivers heavy rain, wind to Atlantic Canada

Thursday, May 5, 2016, 6:00 PM - A significant system with heavy rain is impacting Atlantic Canada through Friday and it's a system that Fort McMurray would gladly take as they deal with a catastrophic wildfire situation.

Rain hit the Maritimes Thursday, with the heaviest amounts expected in Nova Scotia, toward Cape Breton by the time all is said and done.
The heaviest rain pushes in from south to north across the Maritimes throughout the overnight into early Friday morning.
Newfoundland can expect its heaviest rainfall accumulation Friday morning as well.
"By Friday morning, rain will push out of the Maritimes and linger over Newfoundland until Friday afternoon," says Soderholm.

- Halifax, Nova Scotia: 25-30 mm
- Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (including Sydney): 30-40 mm
- Southern New Brunswick: 15-20 mm
- Charlottetown, P.E.I.: 15-20 mm
- St. John's, Newfoundland: 25-30 mm
- South shore of Newfoundland: 50+ mm
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Newfoundland's south coast with as much as 70 mm possible through Friday afternoon.
"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," EC says. "Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible."

"Moderate northeast winds across the whole Atlantic region Thursday with gusts between 30-40 km/h likely," Soderholm says. "The winds will pick up in intensity for Newfoundland on Friday with moderate southerlies, gusting to 50-60 km/h at times." Wind story:
