Plunging temperatures, snow and high avalanche risk out west

Monday, November 24, 2014, 10:29 AM - After a snowy weekend, there's more on the way for the west, and that's bad news for travellers and skiers.

It starts (or, rather, continues) in British Columbia, where a low pressure system is bringing quite a bit of rain to B.C. for the next couple of days.

Around 45-70 mm could fall on western Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland by Tuesday night, with lesser amounts elsewhere, but inland and in the higher elevations, the system will manifest as snow, depositing as much as 30 cm by Tuesday.

Environment Canada has a special weather statement for much of the interior, warning of the snowfall.

The snow's aftermath can be just as dangerous. By Tuesday, avalanche risk will be considerable-to-high for much of the province's ranges.

Across the mountains, there's still a bit of snow to fall on Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Amounts will be heaviest in the province's southwest, where a wind warning is also in effect for the Crowsnest Pass region.

It should all clear out by Tuesday night, People in Alberta should keep an eye on what's happening in B.C. Moisture from that system will fuel an Alberta clipper off the Rockies later this week.

Forecasters are still nailing down the precise figures, but potentially heavy snow is possible over much of southern Alberta, beginning Wednesday.

Expect temperatures to take a sharp dive by Friday also, reaching down to the -15oC mark, but feeling like -20 or colder with the windchill.
