According to a report from CBC, about 700 people will begin evacuations of the James Bay community on Friday. The overall execution of the plan is seen by officials with the First Nation as well as the provincial government.
The evacuations are a precautionary measure as flooding in Kashechewan is problem every year. Flood waters from the Albany River typically run over and through the community's dike, the CBC says.
Most of the residents that will be evacuated by plane are elders, with the first planeload expected to land around 12 pm on Friday. More flights will be scheduled for Saturday and the community of Kapuskasing is prepared to take as many as 450 evacuees.
