The death toll from Typhoon Haiyan has jumped.

More than 27,000 people were injured in the devastating storm and now -- authorities say that 6,009 people have been confirmed dead.

The storm tore through six Philippine islands last November, leaving entire communities without access to food and medical care. Disaster officials say more than 3.4 million people were impacted.

Shortly after the storm hit in early November, authorities expressed fears that the death toll could reach as high as 10,000 people.

More than 1,000 people are still missing.
