One dead as boiling water fills the streets in Lund, Sweden

Saturday, February 7, 2015, 10:24 AM - One person is dead after a burst heating pipe caused near boiling water to flood streets in Lund, Sweden on Friday. The death is being blamed on a bus accident that occurred as a result of the flooding, although police have yet to confirm.

"Units have reported almost zero visibility," Nils Norling of the Skåne police said.

Police responded to reports of the bus accident around 7:15 p.m. local time, an hour after emergency services determined the source of the leak to be a fractured district heating pipe in the city centre. While what caused the bus accident is still uncertain, a witness reported seeing the bus lurching down the street, out of control, with a mangled bicycle in its wheels.

"When you see a bus approaching careering in that manner and hear people screaming and see somebody lying in one place and someone lying in another, then it all becomes rather overwhelming," Norling added.

Local residents used wooden pallets to walk in the water after the break, in an effort to avoid burns.

In addition to the one dead, seven other people were reported to have injuries linked to the water break.

Lund is a town in the southern province of Scania, and houses Lund University, established in 1666, and stands as one of Scandanavia's largest institutions for education.
