Next big storm threatens Atlantic Canada with snow, wind

Wednesday, January 27, 2016, 7:52 AM - As rain gradually eases and temperatures cool across Atlantic Canada late Wednesday, all eyes are on the next big storm set to bring heavy snow, strong winds and blowing snow to the region this weekend.

A special weather statement is already in place for Newfoundland as a low pressure system is forecast to form over the southeastern United States and track towards the province by Friday.

"While it is too early to predict the snowfall amounts associated with this system, there exists the potential for significant snowfall, high winds, and blowing snow over southeastern Newfoundland beginning Friday afternoon," says Environment Canada in the statement.

"Most computer models have the low tracking south of Nova Scotia and bringing snow before continuing to move east and brushing the Avalon," adds Weather Network meteorologist Nadine Hinds-Powell. "Strong winds likely to be the most significant factor for the Avalon, with gusts over 100 km/h possible."
