New homes to come with car charging stations

Wednesday, April 20, 2016, 3:24 PM - The Quebec government plans to mandate the installation of 240-volt electric car charging stations in all new homes built in the province, the Quebec Journal reports.
This will cost buyers of single family homes, semi-detached homes and condos an additional $400, according to the publication. This covers the cost of the electric panel and the wiring, but not a connected charger.
The plan is part of a government strategy to increase the sales of electric vehicles by enabling easier installation of a charging station, which can cost around $1,000.

Owners of rental properties, including already-built buildings, will also be required to provide tenants with charging stations. Landlords will be given a grant of $600 to install the terminals.
The Minister of Transport, Jacques Daoust, confirmed to the Journal an impact assessment is in progress, with regulation expected to pass by the end of the summer.
Currently, electric vehicles aren't a popular choice in Quebec, with only 8,338 in the province in December 2015.
Provincial government officials have set a target to increase the number of electric vehicles on Quebec roads to 100,000 by 2020.
