Sunday, November 16, 2014, 12:42 PM - Take a look at this nearby collision with a couple of moose.

The lucky driver narrowly avoided disaster on the dark Ontario road.

According to Transport Canada an average of about 1800 collisions with animals occur every year, with about 20 of them being fatal for the driver. Most of the Newfoundland animal-vehicle collisions are moose-related and the large animals die about 89% of the time they are involved.

But what should you do if you see a moose?

One theory suggests that your best bet is to hit the gas and face it head on, in hopes that the increased speed will send the animal flying above your car. But does that work?

According to Discovery Channel's Mythbusters the answer is no. The popular show tested the theory replacing the animal with a 280-kg replica of a moose and driving toward it at different speeds. They found that higher speeds in fact increased the force of impact which caused a more powerful and damaging smackdown between the objects.

So what's your best bet? Well, first of all always pay attention to any signs. Some areas are more likely to become a crossing for moose and deer, and often those parts are marked with warning signs.

Other tips include observing your surroundings, driving defensively and at a safe speed.
