A multi-vehicle crash closed all eastbound lanes of Highway 401 early Wednesday.

Provincial police say "numerous transports" prompted the eastbound lanes from Cobourg east to Grafton to be shut down.

According to police, it happened at 3:20 am on Wednesday.

One report indicated at least eight tractor-trailers were involved in the chain reaction collision.

One person suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital

Poor weather conditions and reduced visibilities were reported at the time of the crash.

Northumberland OPP say that weather along that stretch of highway can be treacherous at times.

"Lake effect snow will continue on and off until Thursday," says Weather Network meteorologist Monica Vaswani.

Cold air will also linger across the region, with wind chill warnings issued in some places.

In late January, a crash involving 30 vehicles also shut down Highway 401 near Cobourg.

Dangerous driving conditions and low visibility were reported at the time.
