Morning Briefing: Four things to know about Canada's weather Sunday

On the last day of the first weekend of the summer, Canadians who are seeing sun and clear skies should soak it up as much as possible.

For the most part, rains are in the forecast for much of the country, as well as the potential for storms in Ontario, Atlantic Canada and the Prairies.

Here are the details.

Atlantic Canada

There are still a few drops to fall on the east coast, with the risk for a few scattered thunderstorms through central parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Temperatures, in the meanwhile, will continue to rise through the day Sunday.

As for additional rainfall, forecasters say the beginning of the next week is looking dry until around Wednesday.

Ontario

Southern Ontario is looking at another dry, seasonal day, and it's about to get hotter.

"Humidity begins to creep into southwestern Ontario this afternoon, becoming a widespread muggy day Monday," Weather Network meteorologist Kelly Sonnenburg said Sunday.

We're seeing some thunderstorm risk for southwestern Ontario Monday evening, pushing northeast overnight into Tuesday.

Northwestern Ontario has had a stormier time this weekend. Late Friday night, a tornado warning was briefly issued for part of the region, and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were in place through the Kenora area Saturday night.

There's more risk of thunderstorms Sunday evening for the region, with some of those storms having the potential to be severe.

Prairie provinces

That severe thunderstorm risk stretches through much of the Prairie provinces on Sunday afternoon.

There will also be some chance of thunderstorms along the foothills of Alberta.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings were widespread in southern Manitoba on Saturday, with straight-line winds, golfball-sized hail and heavy downpours all major threats.

At one point, tornado warnings were in effect in the region of Ste. Anne, Man., around 5 p.m. local time. That warning soon dropped, and no tornado has been confirmed at this time.

Thunderstorm risk continues though the region on Monday.

British Columbia

On the west coast, moisture continues to push to the central and north coast, interacting with a ridge that will keep Vancouver dry.

Wind gusts along Haida Gwaii could exceed 100 km/h into the afternoon Sunday.
