Morning Brief: Five things to know about Tuesday

Tuesday, October 14, 2014, 8:36 AM -

Want to know what you can expect today or what you missed overnight?

Don't worry. The Weather Network has you covered with this morning's briefing.

1. Above seasonal weather for Atlantic Canada

Fair and above seasonal weather is expected for the region today and into Thursday as a high pressure system will keep things relatively calm.

"Gusty winds are expected for Newfoundland on Wednesday morning and through the afternoon," said Brett Soderholm, meteorologist at The Weather Network. "The Maritimes will be seeing tempreatrues in the low to mid twenties."

But the end of the week isn't looking as quiet.

"A system could bring showers to the region on Thursday and into Friday," Soderholm said. "This could bring potentially significant rainfall amounts."

There's still some uncertainty in the progression of this system due to model disagreement but as the picture becomes clearer we'll be sure to update you with the latest.

2. Summer makes a return to southern Ontario

After some cooler days, summer-like weather makes a return today in southern Ontario and southern Quebec with temperatures reading the mid-twenties. Humidity is going to make it feel close to or above 30 C.

Expect breezy conditions throughout the morning and into the afternoon, in advance of rain later today.

There is an embedded thunderstorm risk for southwestern Ontario today, with London and Kitchener-Waterloo particularly at risk. But these storms are expected to be non-severe.

3. Stormy weather near the Georgian Bay

A fairly strong low pressure system is bringing showers to regions northeast of the Georgian Bay today. The same system will then usher in rain for southwestern Ontario later this afternoon and through the overnight before moving toward eastern Ontario.

This could cause some issues for the commute home as it could hit areas with heavy traffic such as the Greater Toronto Area at about 4 p.m. Amounts should be less than 15 millimeters.

The week ahead is not looking great for Ontario and Quebec as an upper-level low sits over the provinces. This will lead to intermitten showers with periods of clearing.

4. The quiet before the storm

Fairly quiet conditions expected across the Prairies for today with beautiful temperatures and conditions across the region.

A low will develop in southern Alberta on Wednesday, leading to a few scattered showers from Calgary to Edmonton, with amounts staying below 10 millimeters.

A sharp cool down is also expected for Saskatchewan on Thursday and Manitoba on Friday.

5. The west coast is a wet coast

It's a marathon of messy weather for the west coast as three systems hit the region in quick succession. The first started on Thanksgiving Monday. The second system is moving into the area on Wednesday before the third (and strongest) takes aim on Friday.
