Monday, November 30, 2015, 8:08 PM - Mild weather across the U.K. has given rise to 'monster' Brussels sprouts, which will be taking over European grocery stores just in time for the holiday season.

Experts say this year's produce is the biggest they've seen in 10 years.

Mild weather across the U.K., coupled with healthy rainfall, helped veggies to reach maturity earlier than usual -- and they just kept on growing.

Many of this year's sprouts are larger than golf balls with a width of 45 mm (golf balls are between 41 and 42.7 mm wide).

U.K. food retailer Tesco said temperatures have to consistently be around 10 degrees warmer than usual to get such large sprouts.

"The larger size of sprouts will be good news for customers as it means the vegetables will be easier to peel, without losing their sweet flavour," Tesco Group Food Sourcing technical manager Rob Hooper told Horticulture Week.

"And because of their size, customers will need fewer of them on their Christmas dinner plates and that means less work in the kitchen."

British farmers are planning to harvest 70,000 tonnes of sprouts this year, with up to 80% being sold between Christmas and the new year.
