The gorgeous weather to start the week is giving way to wind, rain and potentially strong storms in Ontario.

Wednesday is when active weather should be at its peak, but it will start Tuesday, courtesy of a short-wave upper level trough passing through southern Ontario.

In practice, that means isolated showers through the morning, and a risk of non-severe thunderstorms in the afternoon.

"The Huron shores, down through London, Sarnia and Windsor, look to have the greatest threat for seeing a thunderstorm, but we can't rule out the risk of seeing an isolated thunderstorm through the Greater Toronto Area, or a shower for that matter," Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton said early Tuesday.

Next up is a low pressure system looking to sweep the province, starting Wednesday afternoon.

With strong gusty winds, heavy rain and a thunderstorm risk to the extreme southwest of the province, it'll usher in a few days of cooler temperatures into the weekend.

Meteorologists are keeping a very close eye on this system, due to the fact it is expected to bring potentially damaging storms to parts of Michigan and the U.S. midwest before it crosses the border into Canada.

As for rain, the heaviest amounts are expected in more northern parts of the region, but Hamilton says that could change somewhat.

"A small change in track could bring heavier amounts of rain into the Greater Toronto Area, but a general 15-25 mm can be expected overnight Wednesday into Thursday in most locations, locally higher in thunderstorms," he says.

Gusty winds will continue through the day on Thursday, but Hamilton says some late-day sunny breaks will be possible.
