Lava could force evacuation of Hawaiian town

Monday, October 27, 2014, 11:14 AM - Molten lava from the Kilauea volcano continues to inch closer toward the town of Pahoa.

Lava reached speeds of up to 18 m/h, which has Hawaii County officials are ready to order evacuations for dozens of people.

A narrow finger of lava has crossed Apa'a street as it continues to travel down slope splitting the magma into two lobes. The northern lobe is moving faster and making its way through the open pasture near the town's cemetery. It has a width of about 40 metres.

The current flow is from an eruption that occurred back in June. The nearest home to the flow is about 250 metres away.

Lava from the Kilauea volcano usually travels south after an eruption but as of two years ago a new northeast path has carried lava toward the town of Pahoa. The current flow is from an eruption that occurred back in June. The nearest home to the flow is about 250 metres away.
