Late September snow knocks out power, shuts down roads in Whitehorse

Wednesday, October 1, 2014, 8:02 AM - #Snowtember continued to put up a fight as heavy snow wreaked havoc on several Whitehorse roads on Tuesday.
At least 10 cm of snow was recorded, catching many drivers off guard and keeping emergency crews busy.

ATCO Electric says the snow brought down trees and powerlines resulting in power outages throughout the city.
Officials say in a typical September, the city usually gets about five centimetres of snow for the entire month.
A few additional flurries could linger through the morning hours on Wednesday, but clearing is expected with sunshine forecast for Thursday.

SNOWFALL WARNINGS IN NUNAVUT
Meanwhile, heavy snow and gusty winds in Nunavut prompted a snowfall warning early Wednesday.
"An intense low pressure system moving through Manitoba will spread snow into much of the Kivalliq region today," said Environment Canada in the warning. "The heaviest snow will occur tonight through Thursday, with total snowfall amounts in the 20-30 cm range expected."
The snow will be accompanied by easterly winds of 50-60 km/h with gusts to 80 km/h, resulting in poor visibility in snow and blowing snow, EC adds.
"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve," EC warns. "Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."
