Is 2015 unlucky? There will be three Friday the 13ths this year

Thursday, March 12, 2015, 3:15 PM - Beware: There will be three Friday the 13ths this year, which begs the question(s): How common is it to have a trio of Friday the 13ths and why is the day considered unlucky?

There was a Friday the 13th in February and there will be another in March.

The next will happen in November.

If your suffer from friggatriskaidekaphobia, or a fear of Friday the 13th, you're probably a little on edge. If that's the case you may want to take a deep breath because it isn't uncommon to see this day repeat multiple times a year.

"Whenever a common year of 365 days starts on a Thursday, it’s inevitable that the months of February, March and November will start on a Sunday," explains EarthSky.org, "and any month starting on a Sunday always has a Friday the 13th."

The last time there was trio was in 2009 and the next will happen in 2026.

WHY IS FRIDAY THE 13TH CONSIDERED UNLUCKY?

You can blame religion for part of it.

"The crucifixion of Jesus took place on a Friday, a day that was also known as 'Hangman's Day' during medieval times," writes Weather Network digital reporter Rodrigo Cokting.

"As for the number, only part of the problem can be traced back to Christianity. There were 13 guests at the Last Supper. Judas, sometimes referred to as the thirteenth guest ... betrayed Jesus ... For many cultures and countries, the number 12 is a 'complete number.' There are 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 inches in a foot, 12 pitches in an octave, 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, 12 pairs of ribs in the human body, etc. Being the number that follows 12 has attached a certain sense of discomfort to thirteen."

Popular culture has also played a role. The infamous slasher film "Friday the 13th"  also helped catapulte the dubious day to infamy.
