Atlantic snowstorm drops 50+ cm in parts, more en route

Saturday, February 6, 2016, 7:19 PM - As a messy system that brought over 50 cm of snow to parts of Atlantic Canada continues to track offshore, yet another low is set to push through the Maritimes, bringing more fresh powder to the mix.

However, first up is a clipper that is set to deliver flurries to western Newfoundland Sunday. Up to 10 cm can be expected for the region, while St. John’s could see a light dusting. Wind gusts could also reach 60 km/h.

The Maritimes looks to dodge the snow with mild conditions and temperatures above seasonal, courtesy of high pressure.

This will be short-lived as a new low is forecast to intensify as it tracks up the U.S. eastern seaboard Sunday, with the Maritimes in line to see more snow.

As a result, Nova Scotia is under a winter storm watch with the potential to see accumulations in excess of 15 cm Monday. Meanwhile, a special weather statement has been issued for parts of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

The snow is expected to start Monday morning for western portions of Nova Scotia, spreading eastward through the day, according to Environment Canada. Strong winds will also be an issue with blowing snow and reduced visibility. Transportation delays are not out of the question as travel will be hazardous.

“Additionally this system will contribute to higher than normal water levels especially along the Atlantic coast as we enter a period of high astronomical tides,” the agency warns.

Friday and Saturday brought mostly rain to Nova Scotia, with a total of 41 mm in Halifax. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, however, got a generous helping of snow, with Charlottetown picking up around 51 cm through Saturday.

Wondering how the rest of winter will shape up? Here's an in depth look at the next six weeks.
