An 'apocalyptic' storm rumbled through Sydney, Australia on Wednesday, slowing the evening commute with major road and train delays.

Flooding on city streets added to the travel chaos and resulted in a multi-vehicle accident in the eastern suburbs.

Shelf clouds are "the outflow from a supercell, in other words, a system producing severe thunderstorms and rotating winds," explains Weather Network meteorologist Brian Dillon.

"The shelf clouds are the cooler air fanning out."
